What skills to expect from our 5-day surf camp in Caparica, Portugal?
So, What skills to expect from our 5-day surf camp in Caparica, Portugal? As I was writing in the announcement post this boot camp is designed for beginner surfers:
We set up this boot camp specially designed for beginners who want to learn how to surf taking them from having never surfed before (or that have tried before but did not progress much) to doing their first turn on a surfboard in 5 days.
This is a very exciting offer as we are confident that our 5-day program can take you from a total beginner to having control over the direction of your surfboard when surfing!
So, taking from what is written on the 5-day surf camp page, let's expand on what each of the following points means:
You will go from beginner/never surfed before to doing your first turn on a surfboard.
We are committed to helping people learn how to surf as we wrote here explaining why we opened a surf school:
Teaching people from beginners to autonomy in the water must be a core value of the school.
Programs should be established on how to go from an evolution stage to the next.
The taste for meaningful traveling and experiences must be part of the school and everybody in it, well, at least almost everybody as many might actually be traveling.
People taking lessons with us should feel that they learned something new with each lesson and are one step closer to reaching those magical shores.
So the first step will be to teach you how to properly stand up (popup/takeoff) on your surfboard. Next, we will fine-tune your popup so you can surf every wave you take.
After you have already mastered the popup you will start introducing you to control the direction of your surfboard while riding the wave.
You will learn what is surfing frontside and backside and start surfing both ways.
You will learn how to turn left and turn right while riding a wave.
You will learn how to link turns left and right (going from toe edge to heel edge and vice-versa) while surfing frontside and backside.
Learning how to control the direction of the surfboard while riding a wave is a necessary skill to successfully surf a green wave (the unbroken part of the wave) and to progress to the next stage of your surfing evolution. We start introducing this skill to our guests early on in the beginner stage because even when surfing whitewash you can still learn new skills that you later can transfer to surfing green waves (the unbroken part of the wave).
This will also give you the ability to control and feel like you can navigate the wave and the surf when you find other surfers and beachgoers in your way while surfing.
We facilitate this stage of learning by removing (for now) the stress of paddling for a wave which is the next skill we will start introducing you to.
You will start to learn how to paddle and manage your board inside the water.
You will learn how to paddle correctly and efficiently and also how to manage yourself and the surfboard inside the water.
We introduce paddling later in the process of learning how to surf so that we can reduce everything that puts more stress on the learning process of how to popup/takeoff, surf, and control the direction of the surfboard when riding the wave.
Paddling for a wave requires that the surfer, not only takes in a lot more information from what is happening with the wave and what is going around him but also the surfer needs to combine and link different skills to get a wave which makes the process of learning to stand and control your board much harder.
You will also learn how to turtle roll and how to get over a wave so that when you finish surfing your wave you can return back to the lineup (the starting point).
We want to make it easier for you to learn how to control your surfboard while surfing so we introduce new skills as you progress.
Also, don't forget to subscribe to our newsletter to get news and discounts on trips:
You will learn about security rules, tips, and dos and don’ts of a beginner surfer.
Security of the surfers, coaches, and beachgoers is an important theme in our surf
school and you can count on us to discuss this during our sessions.
We will keep our lessons safe and controlled so you can enjoy and relax while learning how to surf.
You will learn about different types of surfboards and their components.
Surfboards are considered by many surfers as an art form and certainly very personal items and I'm certain you will start to feel the same way as you progress as a surfer.
Surfboards can be constructed of many different materials and shapes to achieve different things when riding a wave, so, we will talk a bit about surfboards and what you can expect from them.
You will learn about the different types of surf breaks.
As written in this previous blog post the composition of the bottom of the ocean and the structures around it will influence how waves are formed. In this topic, we will present and discuss the different types of waves and spots you will find when you go surf.
Here in Costa da Caparica, the bottom of the ocean is all sand and in some cases, like our local surf school beach Nova Praia, it has jetties to help break the sea and the powerful waves during big swells. We will be discussing all this during our sessions.
What to expect after you finish our 5-day surf camp in Caparica, Portugal.
By the end of this boot camp, you will be one step closer to full autonomy inside the water.
You will certainly feel like you have learned and progressed a lot by the end of the week and that soon you will be able to join one of our guided surf adventures.
We hope we have explained well what you will be learning during your surf boot camp, and, don't forget:
Bookings are still open, so, book now to guarantee your spot!
